Infectious Illness Control Plan
Definitions and Relationships
N/A
Purpose
eCycle Solutions is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all our staff. The severity of illness or how many people will fall ill from infectious acute respiratory illnesses is unknown. If there is evidence of an infectious disease outbreak, eCycle needs to be able to respond in a flexible way to varying levels of severity and be prepared to refine our operations as needed. For the general public, such as workers in non-healthcare settings and where it is unlikely that work tasks create an increased risk of exposures, the immediate health risk is considered low.
Scope
This procedure applies to all eCycle Solutions plants.
Responsibility
E-cycle’s responsibilities
The employer has the following responsibilities:
- The management of eCycle must ensure that all employees fully understand and practice Corporate Hygiene Policy.
- Ensure all workers including front line leaders/ managers are fully aware and trained on this procedure.
- Upper management will monitor news reports and recommendations from health agencies and will send updates to employees as appropriate. It is their discretion to implement and enforce a travel ban for employees as deemed necessary.
- Ensure employees are cross trained in multiple positions/lines as much as possible to allow for flexibility if forced to work with a limited number of staff due to a larger than normal absenteeism in the plant.
- Since germs are able to survive on surface materials for an extended period of time, ensure that workers are provided appropriate PPE to prevent from the exposure or contact with infectious material (for example, gloves, coveralls, and masks if requested).
- Employees who appear to have acute respiratory illness symptoms (i.e. cough, shortness of breath) upon arrival to work or become sick during the day should be separated from other employees and be sent home immediately.
- Do not request a healthcare provider’s note for employees who are sick with acute respiratory illness to validate their illness or to return to work, as healthcare provider offices and medical facilities may be extremely busy and not able to provide such documentation in a timely way.
- If an employee is confirmed to have an acute respiratory illness, supervisors should inform fellow employees of their possible exposure in the workplace but maintain confidentiality of the infected worker as required by law.
Worker’s Responsibility
The workers have the following responsibilities:
- Employees who have symptoms of acute respiratory illness are recommended to stay home and not come to work until they are free of fever (100.4° F [37.8° C] or greater using an oral thermometer), signs of a fever, and any other symptoms for at least 24 hours, without the use of fever-reducing or other symptom-altering medicines (e.g. cough suppressants). Employees should notify their supervisor and stay home if they are sick.
- Employees who are well but who have a sick family member at home with an acute respiratory illness should notify their supervisor.
- Employees should advise their supervisor if they have recently visited an area where outbreak has been identified.
- All workers must follow established hygiene rules on a daily basis.
- All workers who may have been exposed are responsible to use any required PPE including masks.
Procedure
Each site’s planning department must be kept aware of employees that are unable to come to work due
to illness as well as the expected longevity of their absence.
eCycle will use employees from temporary agencies when possible to fill positions.
The planning department will place employees on lines that maximize eCycle’s production capacity,
ensuring the employee has sufficient training to complete the tasks expected of them.
In more extreme cases of absenteeism, planning may need to shut down a line or multiple lines to
maximize production in other areas. If working 2 shifts, the plant may have to consider temporarily
working only 1 shift.
Planning will communicate with Management, Operations and Sales, to identify critical lines based on
material supply and customer contracts.
Operations will keep sales appraised of current status of customer material. Sales will in turn
notify clients of any issues pertaining to eCycle meeting our contractual commitments.
Office staff may be requested to work from home if a serious bout of illness hits the organization.
Refer to eCycle’s Business Continuity Plan in the extreme event that a facility is unable to maintain
adequate operations to meet customer contracts.
Key Guidance for Infected Individual at Work
- Isolate the individual; have them go to their car if available or to an isolation room. Avoid using the first aid room if possible, to avoid contamination.
- If employee is severely ill, isolate them in a designated isolation room/area and have a member of management (and or first aider) wear PPE and gather information from employee regarding who they had been in contact with and where they had been throughout the plant.
- The sick individual is then to be sent home, and they are to contact their doctor or public health department for further guidance.
- Send anyone who had been in close contact with the sick employee home to self-isolate until more information is received regarding the infected individual.
- Clean and disinfect all potentially infected areas.
- HR is to follow up with the sick individual to determine what medical or public health guidance they were given.
- Communicate guidance as needed and determine what further steps need to be taken (ie. maintain social distancing and hygiene practices and/or shut down contaminated departments).
- Ensure that management, employees and Executive team are kept up to date regarding the situation and what actions are required.
