IT Asset Disposition Services (ITAD)

What is Asset Disposition?

Asset disposition refers to the process of properly disposing of or recycling unwanted or obsolete equipment. Our team helps to streamline the asset disposition process, including pick-up and drop-off services, logistics planning, asset tracking, and data wiping. We work with individuals and large organizations to coordinate recycling plans that are environmentally friendly and convenient for our customers.

Beyond our recycling services, we also work with individuals and businesses to maximize the value of recovered items by refurbishing them and making them operational again.

IT Asset Disposition Services - eCycle Solutions

The improper disposal of electronic waste into landfills is causing massive amounts of long-term damage to our local ecosystems. Recycling e-waste isn’t just about getting rid of old, damaged, or broken technology, it’s about building a healthier future for both our environment and the generations to come. By reducing e-waste through responsible recycling, we can minimize the harmful impact on the planet. When you deliver your tools to a recycler for either refurbishment or reuse, you are actively reducing landfill pollution, saving energy, and conserving resources.

Follow these guidelines and conditions for recycling your tools and used electronics to help us make a lasting impact on our community and environment.

What Tools Can Be Recycled?

At eCycle, our goal is to create the most significant positive impact on the community and environment through comprehensive recycling services. We provide recycling solutions for a wide range of tools and instruments of all brands, ensuring environmentally friendly and sustainable disposal options for as much e-waste as possible. Whether your tools are old, damaged, or completely nonfunctional, we can facilitate their reuse and reintegration into society. The types of tools and instruments we currently accept for refurbishment or recycling include:

  • Large/Table Top Tools: Routers, sanders, grinders, drill presses, table saws, compressors, jointers, etc.
  • Hand Tools: Pliers, multi-tools, hammers, screwdrivers, hand saws, planers, drivers, etc.
  • Portable Electronic Tools (Corded and Battery Operated): Power drills, electric screwdrivers, soldering irons, heat guns, etc.
  • Specialty Tools: Woodworking, masonry, plumbing, metalwork, hobbyist tools.

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept tools that are stationary or require any sort of fuel or combustion for power. If you are recycling heavy equipment or large volumes of tools, please contact us ahead of time to coordinate the transfer.

Tool Eligibility and Conditions

As an industry-leading electronic recycling company, one of our primary goals is to recycle and repurpose as much e-waste as our means will allow. This commitment leads us to accept many different kinds of tools and electronic instruments, regardless of their working condition.

If you have tools that are damaged or entirely broken, we will gladly take them. We recycle tools in any condition, even if they are no longer operational. Damaged tools can potentially be repaired or refurbished for reuse, and broken tools can still be salvaged for valuable parts and materials.

For safety purposes, please inform us if you have any tools that are damaged or broken to the point where they display signs of potential harm, such as sparks, smoke, short-circuiting, loose blades, or frayed cords.

How to Prepare Tools for Recycling

From electric screwdrivers to power tool battery recycling, following a specific procedure ensures the proper disposal of your electronic waste.

Cleaning

Before handing off your tools for recycling, please wipe down the items to ensure they are free of any hazardous substances or residue. This promotes safety throughout the handling process for both workers and the environment, preventing contamination.

Disassembly

If possible, safely disassemble tools before recycling. Although not mandatory, disassembling your tools and detaching any loose parts greatly assists in streamlining the recycling process. If you lack the technical knowledge or cannot safely disassemble your tools, don’t worry; our team will handle all necessary disassembly after processing your items.

Separating Materials

If you have disassembled your tools, please separate the plastic and metal components. This allows us to sort your electronic waste more efficiently and aids in the refurbishment or recycling process.

Removing Batteries

To prevent hazardous materials from causing environmental damage, we make every effort to recycle batteries safely. This involves ensuring that batteries are removed from electronic tools and handled with necessary care. Therefore, we ask that you remove batteries before recycling your tools. This also applies to rechargeable batteries for power tools. Once removed, please separate the batteries from the electric tools themselves. If you only have batteries and no tools to recycle, we can still assist you with proper e-waste disposal. You can recycle batteries at any of our five processing facilities.

Packaging

We recommend placing your tools in sturdy boxes to prevent damage during transport. Place parts, materials, components, and batteries into separate boxes. Labeling your boxes with the type of tool and its operational condition helps streamline the recycling or refurbishment process at our facilities.

Importance of Recycling Tools

The disposal of electronic waste is a pressing issue in our modern society. Technology is deeply integrated into our lives and constantly evolving. Every year, new upgrades lead to thousands of old, damaged, and non-operational electronics being dumped into landfills, oceans, and rivers. Unfortunately, electronics contain many substances toxic to the environment, such as mercury, lead, cadmium, beryllium, toner/ink, and leaded glass. These harmful substances seep into surrounding soil and water, causing contamination and lasting damage to local ecosystems.

By recycling your tools with an electronic recycling company, you help divert e-waste from landfills, contributing to reducing environmental harm. The refurbishment, recycling, and reuse processes for tools also consume less energy and produce fewer emissions compared to harvesting raw materials for manufacturing new tools.

Even if your tools are in poor condition or completely broken, they still offer value in their materials and components. Materials in electronic waste, such as plastic, gold, copper, aluminum, and other metals, can be salvaged and reused for producing new technology. This practice conserves natural resources, reduces the environmental strain of harvesting new materials, and promotes a sustainable circular economy for future generations.

Join us in making a positive impact on the environment by recycling your tools responsibly. Visit eCycle to learn more about our tool recycling services and how you can participate in sustainable waste management. Together, we can build a healthier, cleaner future for our planet.

Environmental Impact of eWaste

Improper disposal of electronic waste can lead to significant environmental harm. eCycle Solutions mitigates these impacts through responsible recycling practices

Electronic devices contain hazardous substances that can pollute soil and water if not properly handled.

Recycling eWaste prevents these pollutants from harming the environment and conserves valuable materials. eCycle Solutions uses advanced techniques to extract and manage these substances safely, reducing pollution and supporting sustainable resource use.

Why It’s Important to Commit to Recycling eWaste

Committing to recycling electronic waste is really important for keeping our environment safe and protecting our health.

Many electronic devices have dangerous materials like lead, mercury, cadmium, and flame retardants. If these aren’t disposed of correctly, they can leak into the ground and water, polluting our natural resources. This pollution can harm animals and plants, and even get into our food, which is bad for human health.

When we recycle electronic waste, we prevent harmful materials from damaging the environment. By making sure electronics are recycled responsibly, we can safely manage and get rid of these dangerous substances. This reduces pollution and keeps our communities safe.

Plus, recycling eWaste lets us reuse valuable materials like metals and plastics to make new things. This saves natural resources and cuts down on the energy needed for mining and manufacturing, which helps reduce greenhouse gases.

Recycling e-Waste is a big part of making our future more sustainable and healthier. When you choose to recycle your old electronics with eCycle Solutions, you’re helping to protect the environment and use resources wisely.

Let’s all work together to make the world cleaner and safer for future generations.

IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) Services for Canadian Businesses

IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) is the secure, documented process of retiring end-of-life IT equipment. It brings together certified data destruction, refurbishment and resale of assets that still have value, and responsible recycling of everything that cannot be reused. For any organization in Canada retiring laptops, servers, or storage drives, ITAD is the control point that protects you against data breaches, regulatory penalties, and environmental liability.

eCycle Solutions delivers fully integrated ITAD nationwide, backed by R2v3 certification, detailed asset tracking, and a Certificate of Destruction on every project.

Our IT Asset Disposition Services (ITAD)

What Does ITAD Stand For?

What Does ITAD Stand For?

ITAD stands for IT Asset Disposition: the managed retirement of computers, servers, drives, and other technology at the end of its useful life. A well-run ITAD program does three things at once.

  1. It permanently destroys the data on every device.
  2. Recovers value from assets that can be reused.
  3. Makes sure the rest is recycled in line with environmental regulations.

Done properly, it turns what can feel like a compliance headache into a documented, auditable, and often profitable process.

Unlike straightforward electronic recycling, which focuses on recovering materials, ITAD is built around chain-of-custody and data security from the moment an asset leaves your floor. If you want the full picture, our guide to what ITAD is and why it matters and our breakdown of the difference between ITAD and secure electronics recycling cover it in detail.

How the eCycle ITAD Process Works

How the eCycle ITAD Process Works

Every ITAD project follows the same clear, trackable path, whether you are retiring a handful of laptops or decommissioning an entire data centre.

  1. Secure pickup and logistics. We schedule a convenient time and collect your equipment, or you can use our public drop-off network and recycling pickup services. Assets travel under documented chain-of-custody.
  2. Asset tracking and audit. Each item is logged by make, model, and serial number, so you always know where it is and what stage it has reached.
  3. Diagnostic evaluation. Devices are tested and graded to identify what can be refurbished and resold.
  4. Resale or recycling. Based on that grading, assets with value are routed to remarketing and the return flows back to you; everything else is routed for responsible recycling.
  5. Certified data destruction. Every data-bearing device is wiped or physically destroyed before it leaves our facility, whether it is headed for resale or recycling.
  6. Reporting. You receive a Certificate of Destruction and a full data report documenting what was received, what was done, and what was recycled.
What Is Included in an eCycle ITAD Program

What Is Included in an eCycle ITAD Program

eCycle provides a full, integrated ITAD service, so you deal with one accountable partner from pickup to final disposition. Here is what that includes.

Secure transportation

With processing facilities across Canada, we keep every asset as close as possible to a secure facility. The shorter chain-of-custody lowers cost and reduces the environmental footprint of the whole process. For businesses redeploying or reselling refurbished devices, we can run diagnostics, quote refurbishment, and ship equipment back to you with minimal effort on your side. See our full network of locations.

Diagnostic evaluation and resale

On request, our team runs a full diagnostic on each device, covering a functional assessment, cosmetic grading, and market valuation. Assets worth recovering move into our refurbishment and resale program, where the return flows back to you through our network of wholesalers, retailers, and end users. Servers and enterprise hardware often retain a meaningful share of their value, so resale frequently offsets the cost of the whole ITAD project. If you would rather direct the proceeds to a cause, we can donate the value of your assets to the charity of your choice.

Detailed asset tracking

Every item is logged by make, model, and serial number the moment we receive it, along with your client details. Our digital tracking system lets us locate any asset at any time and confirm whether it has been wiped, recycled, or refurbished for resale. You receive a Certificate of Destruction and a complete data report covering what was received, what services were performed, and what was ultimately recycled.

Warehousing and redeployment

Many clients are surprised to learn their retired assets are still functional and valuable. We offer secure warehousing and as-needed redeployment, so you can store equipment at one of our facilities until you need it, without tying up your own space or budget.

Certified data destruction

Protecting your data is the priority. We offer comprehensive data wiping and hard drive destruction, including on-site or off-site shredding and degaussing, so sensitive information can never be recovered. Witnessed destruction is available on request, and we can back up your data before wiping if you need to keep it. Our Brampton facility holds NAID AAA and ISO/IEC 27001 certification for information security, which matters for organizations with strict data-handling obligations. For why this step is never optional, read why secure data destruction is important.

ITAD Solutions by Sector

ITAD Solutions by Sector

ITAD requirements look different depending on who you are and what data you handle. eCycle tailors the program to each audience:

See the full range of sectors we support on our industries page.

Why ITAD Matters for Compliance

Why ITAD Matters for Compliance

For regulated industries, ITAD is not optional. A single drive that leaves the building with recoverable data can trigger a breach under PIPEDA or sector-specific rules. A certified ITAD process with documented data destruction gives you the audit trail to prove every asset was handled correctly. That is why finance, healthcare, government, and enterprise IT teams treat ITAD as part of their security posture rather than an afterthought. For a deeper look, see our guide on why ITAD is essential for cybersecurity.

What Does ITAD Cost?

What Does ITAD Cost?

There is no one-size-fits-all price for ITAD, because cost depends on volume, the type of equipment, the level of data destruction you need, and whether assets are collected or dropped off. eCycle works on transparent, upfront quotes: any disposal or pickup charges are outlined clearly before we schedule, so there are no surprises. In many cases, resale value from refurbished equipment offsets part or all of the project cost, and for higher-value fleets ITAD can even pay for itself. Request a quote and we will scope your project and walk you through the numbers.

How to Prepare IT Assets for Disposition

How to Prepare IT Assets for Disposition

A little preparation keeps your project fast and secure:

  • Inventory what you are retiring, and note anything that must appear on your Certificate of Destruction.
  • Record asset tags or serial numbers if you keep your own register, so you can reconcile against our report.
  • Back up anything you need. We can also perform on-site backup before wiping.
  • Leave data destruction to us. You do not need to wipe drives yourself; handing over data-bearing devices intact is what lets us certify destruction from end to end.
  • Remove loose batteries where possible, and pack equipment securely for transport.

If you are unsure about a specific device or process, our FAQ covers the common questions, or you can call our team.

Building an Audit-Ready ITAD Strategy

Building an Audit-Ready ITAD Strategy

Use this checklist to evaluate or strengthen your program:

  1. Confirm certifications. Require R2v3 and NAID-level data destruction from any vendor, and verify it directly through our certifications page.
  2. Demand chain-of-custody. Every asset should be tracked by serial number from pickup to final disposition.
  3. Get documentation. Insist on a Certificate of Destruction and a full data report for every load.
  4. Capture resale value. Have assets graded and remarketed so recovery offsets your costs.
  5. Close the loop responsibly. Ensure non-reusable material is recycled with maximum landfill diversion.
