How eWaste impacts the environment eWaste can contain many hazardous materials that pose health and environmental problems in our landfill sites. CRT monitors contain lead, most backlit electronics contain mercury, and almost all plastic found in electronics contain brominated flame retardants. These substances build up over time in the environment and in our bodies and have been shown to impair neurological developmental in children. Other materials like the toner in printers are proven carcinogens. It is becoming increasingly apparent that discarded electronics are a ticking toxic time-bomb that, if not handled properly today, will come back to haunt us tomorrow.
